  •   In-text Citation
Research by Wegender and Petty ( 1994 ) supports....
Jones ( 1998 ) found students often had difficulty using APA Style.
  • Reference List

Based on the notes that the librarian gave to me, APA ( American Psychological Association ) style is the most often that used to cite sources with within social sentences. It's exist in 1929 when a group of psychologists, anthropologists and business managers convened and sought to establish a simple set of procedures or style rules that would arrange the many components of scientific writing to make it easy for reading comprehension.

As with other editorial styles, APA Style consists of rules or guidelines that a publisher observes to ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material. It concerns uniform use of such elements as :

  • Selection of headings, tone and length
  • Punctuation and abbreviations
  • Presentation of numbers and statistics
  • Construction of tables and figures
  • Citation of references
  • Other element that are part of manuscript
APA Style rules and guidelines are found in the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

Goal Statement- The Five Step Approach

Goal Setting

by Madam Hamidah Abdul Rahman, Madam Rosenani Sidek & Madam Wan Rozita

( Modul 2 )

What Are Goals ?

  • Goals are the ends toward which we direct our effort.
  • In other words, goals are things we want to achieve, things we aim for as we pursue a certain course of action.
  • We can improve our academic performance in college by learning to set goals that motivate us to do well and that increase chances for success.

1. Goals should be self-chosen
  • Goals that are set by our parents, teachers or friends may not always work for us. We must set our own goals because we know our ability and what we are more skillful.
  • We need to determine or choose our own goals.
  • We need to decide what we want to accomplish. If we set our own goals, we will be more motivated to achieve them.
2. Goals should be moderately challenging
  • One way to set moderately challenging goals is to consider what we have done in the past.
  • Goals can always be revised if we discover what we can achieve more than the originally we set out to accomplish.
3. Goals should be realistic
  • Think about whether our goals are attainable :
eg: It would be unrealistic to expect to get a B or better in Calculus if your math background is very weak and your high school grades in math were never higher than a C.
  • To set realistic goals, we must carefully evaluate our chances of achieving each goals.
4. Goals should be measurable
  • A goal is measurable if we can determine whether we reached it.
  • It would be difficult to determine whether we achieved our goal if we just wanted to " do well on a course ".
  • It would be much easier to measure our success if we had aimed for an A or a B
5. Goals should be specific
  • The more specific our goals are, the more motivated we will be to achieve them.
  • eg : Getting a B in college Algebra is a specific goal; while getting a " good grade " in College Algebra is not
6. Goals should be finite/limits/bounds
  • Goals need to have a limited time frame.
  • eg : If a paper is due by Friday, you need to have it done by Friday. However, you might decide to have the paper done by Wednesday so that you can get prepare for your big Biology examination on Friday.
  • It's important to set deadlines for all of your goals
7.  Goals should be positive
  • Negative goal statements tend to make we feel that we can't really be successful; they aren't motivating.
  • eg : " I don't want to get any lower than a C in any of my classes," " I won't go to to dinner until I get this calculus work done."
  • From that, you will always do better if you are working toward something- when you have a positive attitude.
  • Avoid using words like try, think and should when we describe our goals.

LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM GOALS
  •  Long-term goals are the objectives we set for ourselves for the end of the year, for four or five years from now or even for a lifetime
  • Short-term goals can beset for an hour from now, for the end of the day, week, month or term ( or semester ) eg : Short-term goals include things like completing a reading assignment, writing an essay, getting a B in a course, getting off probation or making the " Dean's List "
  • Think of your short-term goals as steps towards achieving the long-term goals you've set for yourself.
ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL GOALS
  1. Academic goals relate to our course work. They include things like going to class, completing assignments and preparing for exams.
  2. Personal goals, like making new friends, participating in clubs or supporting events, exercising or even doing our laundry.
10 tips to get off to the right start this semester
  • Be selective in choosing classes - so you don't regret make a wrong decision
  • Go to all classes and take notes - to easy yourself to prepare for any test
  • Keep up with your reading assignments - not easily forget
  • Learn to say no - for the things that don't have any benefit to ourselves
  • Create a good study environment - comfortable and can focus to study
  • Set realistic grade goals
  • Study for exams by writing and reciting out loud
  • Learn to predict exam questions
  • When taking exams, relax and be sure to read the directions
  • Go to your college learning center when you need help - ask for their opinion

Five-Step Approach to setting goals

  • STEP 1 : Tentative Goal Statement
eg : I want at least a B in Biology.
  • STEP 2 : List of Obstacles
eg : I have trouble following the lecture and I struggle to take notes.
  • STEP 3 : List of Resources
eg : I will read the chapter before the lecture, I will rewrite my notes afterward.
  • STEP 4 : Revised Goal Statement
eg : I will try to earn a B in Biology
  • STEP 5 : Polished Goal Statement
eg : I will achieve a B in Biology this semester

Note-taking Strategies & Cornell Method

Note-Taking Strategies

by Ahmad Faris, Nursuria Binti Setaman & Puan Rozita Mohammad

( Modul 6 )

Definition - WRITING DOWN IDEAS FROM LECTURES AND READINGS IN OUR OWN WORDS.

As a student, this is the most important thing to get an excellent result and achieve your target on your examination and get a flying colours. This is because, by taking a notes during lecture time or make a own notes aster studying by chapter, it will helps students in many ways such as :
  • Helps to pay attention in class
  • Helps us study for quiz, tests or final exam
  • Helps to improve our memory
  • Helps us take ownership of ideas
  • Helps us engage our senses
  • Helps to organize and process data and information

Why we have to review notes ?

This is because as a person, we will lost around 80% of what we have hear if we are not reviewed  back within a few hours. So, we must take time EVERY DAY to review notes so that we will never lost the information that we got.

Some of student said that if they write a notes in the class, their attention and focus will be distract at the same time. So, they cannot hear better the explanation from lecturer.

How can they do some notes during lecture time but at the same time they can give full attention in the class?

- Actually they have to study first for the chapter that they will learn during lecture time and do some notes for every chapter. This is because it will be easier to more understand during lecture time and get an idea for what they will learn about. There's have an advantage if a students do their own notes before the class.

These are the advantage :
  • Can be always alert
  • Not easily forget the important information
  • Easily to memorize
  • Increasing the creativity of mind
  • Be more focus in class
But how to take notes in the right way? Many students are not notice the right way to take a notes. It is maybe looks like little things but it can effect our notes.

Here's the details that requires to have in every notes :
  • Date and Day
  • Label notes
  • Title
  • Leave some space to add new information
  • Use an outline to show - main ideas, support and examples
  • Write using our own words ( only ourselves can understand what we wrote )
  • Use abbreviations or symbols - to takes short time note taking

When doing a note during the lecture time, students must be aggressive not a passive and be a listener. If have anything that cannot understand, students have to quickly ask questions and ask for the explanation. If do not have any chance to ask, write out the questions in the notes.

What kind of notes that students suppose to do?

1. Cornell Note Taking

2. Two Column Method

3. Outlining

4. Mapping Method

5. Sentence Method

How to review after a class?
  • Create our own examples based on our understanding
  • Discuss and compare notes to other, to check if there's some important information we missed
  • Re-write notes to be more organized and practical
  • Practice skills
  • Ask lecturer
Key action to note based on the Observation of the instructor

- Be alert to the repetition
  • When an instructor repeats a specific point, make note of it. Might it be the questions that the instructor will ask again
-Watch in front of the class
  • Watch forward to the board or the screen ( projector )
  • If the instructor writes something on the board, means the material is important
- Keep notice the instructor's interest
  • For example; if lecturer is excited to explain about some topic, mostly it will turn out on an examination
- Do not be a judgemental person
  • As students, we are not allow to judge the lecturer's style of the way to teach

How to get an interested on the lecture :
  • Avoid to sit behind the class it is because when the students sit at the back, they will easily to sleep because cannot hear lecturer's voice too much. Other than that, the board is hard to read and see. Sit on the behind will actually take a risk to ourselves.
SQ4R
  • Survey - overview quickly scan
  • Question - Establish a purpose
  • Read - to answer questions
  • Rite - take notes
  • Review - at the short intervals
  • Recite - answer to questions without open a book

 Learning Style Inventory

by Wan Rohana Binti Wan Endut

( Modul 1 )

So basically, i would like to introduce what is the real meaning of learning style inventory? Learning style inventory are designed to help students determine which learning style they are suitable for. These inventories typically can easily know if answer a questions that focuses on which way that students are prefer to learn. Each students have their own style of learning, so this method is propose to get all students can classify and find their 'style' of learning.

But, many students have this problem. What do i mean? well, the students may not know the exactly way to used this learning style inventories correctly and also does not know their types of learning style. So, they learn by the wrong style that are not suitable for them and get hard to learn a lesson.

It's basically depends on the person, the way they are suitable to learn. It's not all the students have the same learning style.

LEARNING STYLE ?
  • Visual - See
  • Auditory - Hear
  • Kinesthetic - Do
Which one is yours ?

Visual, it is more to :
  • Look at lecturer's face when in lecture to be more focus during lecture time
  • To get full attention in the class, you must seat in front of the class because it is less distraction
  • Avoid to seat at the behind of the class
  • Do some notes in the class so that you can't easily forget

  • Need to do some activities so they will not get bored
  • Always have to ask the questions - to avoid drowsiness
  • Hear some of music while studying alone - get more interested to study
  • Read the topic thoroughly before class. Use SQ3R technique

SQ3R. What is it mean? it is Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review.

Survey :
  1. Make a survey to get an idea for the chapter that are read. For examples; focus on the title, subheading, intro of every chapter, graph, pictures or summary of the topic. You can easily can get an idea for what you will learn easily
Question :

Time Management & Organizational Skills

Time Management & Organizational Skills

by Dr. Mohamad Azmi Nias Ahmad

( Modul 4 )

" Whatever you do, you must start it when you believe in yourself ", this is the quote that i got from my lecture time. As a person, we have to make a right choice so, we will never regret of what decision we made. Especially, when we have to decided to success or not? yes, every person must say that they want to success but what's the efforts to make them success in something they want? For a student like me, time management and organization are the most important things that we have to manage it wisely. We must have a plans, schedule and arrangement for everything that we do.

Why time are so important to us as a human?
  • Sabda Rasulullah s.a.w yang bermaksud:
- Riwayat al-Tabrani -
  • Rasulullah s.a.w bersabda yang bermaksud ;
“Rebutlah lima perkara sebelum datang lima perkara, usia mudamu sebelum tua, masa sihatmu sebelum sakit, masa senangmu sebelum papa, masa hidupmu sebelum mati, dan masa lapangmu sebelum sibuk.

So, that are the reasons why time are important to us and we can't argue with that. On top of that, there are a lot of strategies that a person can do based on their creativity. These is some of strategies that are useful for students; ( DAWAS )
  • Daily planner - according to hours
  • Academic vs Personal life - have to balance for both
  • Weekly schedule - plan weekly activity
  • Avoid procrastination - will not rush at the last minute
  • Semester calendar - easier way to remember
Every student must have their own to-do-list. It's because to make sure their time will be manage wisely for the things that are important to do and also bring goodness to ourselves. It's based on the people whether they want to do daily schedule, weekly schedule or monthly schedule.

This is the example of weekly schedule

But as a student, i know it is a little bit hard to follow this strategy at the first. We must do it continuously until end of the semester to get the result of effectiveness. The question is, how to make this strategy happens without any distraction?
These are the way to overcome this problems to make the strategy happen :
  1. Remind back for your goals
  2. Alert to deadline, it's better if you put some note to remind the deadline of your assignment
  3. Prioritized on the works that you may have to be done
  4. Give a self rewards ; for example - you can eat a chocolate for every chapter that you have learned
All of these can give a some spirit for students to do it earnestly and will not to procrastination because our mental thinking is the first one that we have to control to make our body do its works.

Procrastination, what is procrastination?
- Procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing some works that actually we have to do.
How can procrastination occur?
It is because ;

Organization are also important to make sure the things we do are always organize. As evidence, a notes that we take from our lecture time. It must be organize so that, we can easily find it back whenever we want to use it as reference for examination or do an assignment.

How to be organize?
  • Put on a date for every notes that we are taking so that it will not miserable
  • Put the notes ( if use a paper ) on a file for every subject
  • Mention the topic of the notes
  • Do some homework planner for everyday or weekly
Why we must be organize?

There's have so many advantage when we being organized. For example ;
  • Keep on schedule and meet deadline for a task
  • Reduce stress when have to faces an assignment or a test
  • Complete a works without stress
  • Build up our confidence level
