Memory Learning

Memory Learning

( Modul 5 )

First of all, what is the difference between memory and brain??

Memory :
  • The retention of information over time ( Santrok, 2011 ) or the mind stores and remember information ( mental process /cognition )
  • Same as computer sofware

Brain :
  • The brain is an organ
  • Similar like a computer hardware
  • From my research, the human brain has an estimated storage capacity of 256 exabytes ( or 256 billion gigs ), the equivalent of 1.2 billion average PC hard drives, enough CDs to make a stack which would reach beyond the moon and 15 libraries for every person on planet

Memory process

Human's Component On Computer :
  •  SOFTWARE – MEMORY
  •   CPU – BRAIN
  •   INTERNAL STORAGE – MEMORY
  •   MOTHER BOARD – HEART
  •    INPUT – SENSORY
  •   SCREEN – EYES
  •    SPEAKER – EARS

MEMORY STRATEGIES

What is the meaning of memory strategies? Memory strategies refer to any techniques that are designed to help someone remember something they read easily. It helps student in the encoding, storing and retrieving the information that help the students to remember and recall back what they have learned.

Remembering is hard work, and memory technique do not necessarily make it easy, they just make it more effective - Kenneth Higbee

Memory strategies can be divided into two main categoriesExternal and internal.

  • External memory strategies tend to be everyday things we do that cue us to remember things . McPherson lists several common ones, including: using a calendar or blackberry, placing things in conspicuous places, jotting down reminder notes, making a shopping list, asking someone to help you remember, and setting a timer.
  • Internal memory strategies take place mentally perhaps the most familiar of these techniques.

Next, what steps should students take if they are having trouble moving information from their working memory to their long term memory?

As the name implies, they must “work on” the information in their working memory in order to
transfer it into the long-term memory.

 Featured below are some simple strategies that, if practiced, will help us to retain information and, ultimately, do well on exams :

  1. Repeat the information many times. As example ; repeat a telephone number 10 times
  2. MNEMONICS  ( Memory tricks ). It is a tool to help remember facts or a large amount of information - it can be a song, rhyme or a phrase to help remember a list of facts in a certain order.
  3. CHUNKING.  The process of organizing information into smaller groupings ( chunk ), theraby increasing the number of times that can be held in STM.
  4. Story TellingWrite a story by focusing on the key points of what you're learning and arranging them in logical sequence. Each event in the story triggers your memory or the next event so you will remember even more.
  5. UnderstandingBefore you begin to memorize something, you must make sure you understand it first. A good way to do this by making a connection between what you are learning and what you have experienced.
  6. Break reading material down ( again no cramming ) for some period of times. Example; revise 2 chapter per day, not all chapters a day before the examination.
  7. Graphic OrganizationThese tools helps you see things you are learn and organize information. There are many types of graphic organizers and it also can be designed by yourself depends on how you want it looks like. For example;

Activity :
  1. How to memorize colours of rainbow
It's sometimes difficult to memorize the colours of rainbow according to their sequence. This is the way to memorize it easily ;

* with acronyms -   M for Merah ( Michael )
                                 J  for Jingga ( Jackson )
                                 K for Kuning ( Keluar )
                                 H for Hijau ( Hutan )
                                 B for Biru ( Bawa )
                                 I for Indigo ( Ibu )
                                 U for Ungu ( Unta )

        2. How to remember a numbers
  • Memorized the numbers everytime
  • Do some repeat
